The Research Council of Norway highlights the development of a new and more robust shrimp pot as an important step towards more sustainable deep-sea shrimp fishing. In this project, researchers, fishers, and gear manufacturers are collaborating to develop a real alternative to traditional bottom trawling, with the aim of reducing environmental impact while simultaneously boosting profitability in the industry.

Møreforsking is a partner in the project Development of offshore pots for competitive and environmentally friendly shrimp fishing (UtiHavet), and has for several years contributed with research on pot fishing for shrimp. This includes the development, testing, and improvement of various pot designs under Norwegian conditions. The expertise built up over time provides a solid foundation for further developing a robust, efficient, and gentle fishing method that works both in calm fjord areas and in more exposed offshore areas.
The innovative shrimp pot currently under development aims to become a practical and environmentally friendly alternative to trawling. The technology can contribute to a lower carbon footprint, better raw material quality, and new opportunities for an industry that seeks to combine profitability with sustainability. The project demonstrates how close collaboration between research and industry can drive forward future-oriented solutions for Norwegian fisheries.
The project has been highlighted as a success story by the Research Council of Norway and is funded through the scheme Innovation Project for Business. Frøystad AS, represented by Hallgeir Frøystadvåg, is the project manager.
The project is developing a new pot for sustainable deep‑sea shrimp fishing — an environmentally friendly alternative to trawling, with a lower climate footprint and improved raw material quality.
