Chronic lifestyle-related diseases are on the rise, presenting significant socio-economic challenges and highlighting the need for innovative health-promoting products. Pre-clinical studies using cell models are essential for bridging product development with clinical validation, as they help identify biological effects and optimize formulations. In this study, keratinocytes stimulated with cytokines were employed as a model to mimic various inflammatory skin diseases.
In the context of the CIRCALGAE EU project, we have worked with industrial side-streams from brown algae (e.g. Laminaria hyperborea), applying water-based extraction techniques, such as subcritical water extraction, to obtain bioactive extracts. This work aims to valorize algal biomass residues by unlocking their potential as sources of high-value compounds. Our research focused on screening the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of these extracts.
